Civil Nuclear Police Federation is backing the STEP (Suicide Trauma Education Prevention) campaign, which aims to reduce the number of police officers who take their own lives.
Between 2011 and 2022, there were 242 suicides of current police officers and police community support officers in England and Wales. More recently (2021 to 2024), an estimated 80 former and current police officers took their own lives.
The Hampshire Police Federation launched the STEP campaign. It focuses on early intervention, mandatory TRiM after suicide exposure, and simple tools like the free Stay Alive app to help officers support themselves and each other.
The three largest Group Insurance companies serving the Police Family have pledged to back the STEP campaign and share vital suicide prevention resources with their 200,000 members. Officer Insurance Cover by Everywhen, Gallagher and Philip Williams & Co, who provide the CNP Federation’s Group Insurance Scheme, are all supporting the national initiative.
A link to the Stay Alive app has been added to CNP Federation’s Group Insurance wallet.
The app is a pocket suicide prevention resource packed full of useful information and tools to help officers stay safe in crisis. It can be used by colleagues who are having thoughts of suicide or by those concerned about someone else who may be considering suicide.
