NYC Marathon: running for young lives

CNP Federation CEO, Gary Thwaite, is taking on his next charity challenge and this time it's in memory of a police officer who was tragically killed on duty.

Gary will tackle the New York Marathon on 3 November in aid of the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund. He has teamed up with fellow runners Craig Hewitt PFEW National board member and Tiff Lynch PFEW National Deputy Chair to raise as much money as possible for the charity.

The PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund was established to honour PC Hughes, one of two female officers shot following a routine burglary call in Manchester in September 2012. The charity provides learning opportunities and pre-employment skills to children and young people who have lost a close family member to a violent crime such as murder or manslaughter.

The New York City Marathon has grown from a local road race held entirely in Central Park to the world's largest marathon. The course starts on Staten Island and takes around 50,000 runners through the five boroughs of the city, ending in Central Park.

Gary Thwaite said: "Having got to know Nicola's father Bryn and seen the work the charity does, it's an honour to be raising money to support its vital work.

"It's fair to say that the three of us have different running abilities but share the same goal. We want to get around the course and still be able to walk afterwards, but most of all we want to raise as much cash as possible for this amazing organisation which is very close to the hearts of the police family."
