Kellan Denny, who is based at Sellafield, is the new Federation Lead for Female Representation and Menopause Support. We asked her about her career to date and why she feels this new role is an important step forward for the Federation and her colleagues.

“I have been in the CNC for over 13 years, and during this time, I have been a mentor and a mentor sergeant, a police medic, an OFC and a lay trainer. I was promoted to substantive sergeant in 2021, and I am currently Acting Inspector on A Section.  I am also a mental health first aider and a domestic abuse champion. Throughout this time, I have worked closely with many officers and have dealt with a lot of welfare situations for colleagues.

“I have been a Fed rep for over 10 years. From 2019 to 2023, I was the Sellafield unit Federation chair, and I began my role on the Exec in 2022. Again, I have supported numerous officers and been involved in many cases. I am PIM trained, and misconduct trained, meaning I have had a lot of exposure to colleagues needing support.

Making progress

“I have recently taken over as the New Parents’ Custodian for the Force and have seen the great work Insp Skilbeck has done around this over the last few years and how far the Force has come. This is why I was keen to take over when Insp Skilbeck stood down, and I believe that taking up the Fed lead on female representation coincides well with this role.

“I hope to continue this work and ensure the same progress is made around menopause and related issues. The CNC has made huge steps in the right direction around menopause, but there is still a long way to go to fully support our female officers through this time. It’s also about raising awareness, which may help male officers in their home lives as well as at work.

Support in difficult times

“The majority of my career in the CNC has been based around helping people and supporting them through difficult times; this is something I strive to do and look forward to continuing.

“I am always available for officers to contact to raise concerns or just have a chat, and I would encourage people to do so. Likewise, Fed reps are always available at all units; however, I understand sometimes it is easier to discuss matters with a female, so don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

“I would also appreciate any suggestions, concerns or feedback individuals have; the only way to continue making things better is if I know the issues people are having to fully support them when needed and ensure positive changes are made.”
