Nick Peck is a member of the CNP Federation’s Executive team and leads on Capability Process Support and Guidance.

He began his career in HM Customs & Excise, which is now better known as ‘Border Force’. He served as a uniformed officer in the Maritime Team, Dog Unit, and on specialised search teams. He later transferred to Kent Police, where he performed General Patrol Duty, CID and in time served within Special Branch, where he specialised in Aviation and Marine Anti-Terrorist intelligence. Nick was promoted to Sergeant in North Kent before applying to the CNC.

Nick transferred to the CNC as a sergeant in 2007 and was initially stationed at Sellafield OPU. He performed the role of DSC for two years as an Inspector and served within SEG for a couple of years before returning to Sellafield.

“I’m currently based at Sellafield where he works shifts, serving as an APM Sergeant within the Police Control Room,” Nick told us. “I am responsible for nine Constables and three Civilian Call Handlers. The work is varied, and I form part of the Command Chain, dealing with both day-to-day incidents and other security incidents.

Nick has been involved with the Federation since 2017 when he became a Sellafield Fed Rep. The following year, he was elected as Sellafield Branch Chair before joining the Federation’s Executive Team in 2019. He was re-elected at the Federation’s conference in November 2024.

Support during difficult times

We asked Nick why he was keen to take on the role of Capability Process Support and Guidance Lead. “I have always been interested in my colleague’s welfare and wishing to help and stand by them during difficult times,” he told us. “I have held the CNPF ‘Welfare Portfolio’ for a number of years and capability has always fallen under this ‘umbrella’, so to speak.”

Nick continued: “Having been through the capability process myself - and having rather negative views on the way I was dealt with - I know how it can feel when an officer goes through this. This is what motivated me to take this advisory role within the CNPF Executive.

“I feel the role is important as I am in a position to help and advise officers going through the process, be it the actual officer themselves, a CNPF Federation Rep assisting an officer going through the process, or even a line manager.”

Independent advice

Rather than being directly involved in cases, Nick’s role will see him providing independent help and advice. “I can also offer a degree of reassurance,” Nick added. “The Capability Process is now seen as a largely supportive mechanism, assisting officers to either return to armed duty, or redeployed to the APM duties that have been created over the past few years.

The APM Sergeant and Constable roles have ensured that an officer can still have a career within this organisation when they can no longer carry a firearm.”

As well as wishing his colleagues a Happy Christmas, Nick’s message to any CNPF member going through the capability process is to seek out your local Rep so that they are there from the start. He said, “The Rep can then engage with line managers, etc and deal with issues when and if they arise. They can also link in with me should they need additional support, especially if the matter falls at Stage 2 of the process.

“I am of the opinion that this process is there to help and assist officers, with the CNPF providing that degree of independent support during what can be a difficult time in a member’s career.”
